How to know when it’s time to get support in your business

Calm and organised workspace with an empty chair, laptop, notebook and coffee, representing business support and creating space for growth.

One of the conversations I have most often with potential clients starts with the words:

“I know I need support, but I’m not sure if now is the right time.”

It’s completely understandable.

‍For many business owners, asking for support feels like a big step. There’s often a feeling that they should be able to manage everything themselves, or that they need to reach a certain stage before getting help.

‍What I’ve noticed over the years is that most people wait far longer than they need to.‍ ‍

Not because they don’t need support, but because they’ve become so used to carrying everything that it starts to feel normal.‍ ‍

When everything depends on you‍ ‍

In the early days of running a business, it’s natural to do a bit of everything yourself.‍ ‍

You know your business better than anyone else, and when you’re building something from the ground up, it often feels easier to just get things done yourself.‍ ‍

But as your business grows, so do the number of things competing for your attention.‍ ‍

Clients need looking after, emails need responding to, content needs planning and projects need managing. There are always decisions to make and loose ends to tie up.‍ ‍

None of these things are particularly unusual. They’re simply part of running a business.‍ ‍

The challenge comes when everything continues to rely on you.‍ ‍

You’re constantly busy, but never quite caught up

Many business owners reach a point where they feel busy all the time, yet somehow never feel on top of things.‍ ‍

The to-do list gets longer rather than shorter. You finish one piece of work only to remember three more things that need your attention.‍ ‍

You tell yourself you’ll catch up next week, after this project, after this launch, or after this busy period.‍ ‍

But somehow there’s always another busy period around the corner.‍ ‍

It's not necessarily that you're doing anything wrong. More often, it's a sign that your business has outgrown the way you're currently managing it. Sometimes it's not the workload itself that's the problem, but the invisible mental load that comes with trying to hold everything together.

The work you want to do keeps getting pushed aside‍ ‍

One of the biggest signs that support could make a real difference is when the work that matters most keeps getting squeezed out by everything else.‍ ‍

The ideas you’ve been meaning to develop.‍ ‍

The improvements you’ve wanted to make.‍ ‍

The relationships you’d like to spend more time nurturing.‍ ‍

The opportunities that never quite make it to the top of the list.‍ ‍

Instead, your time gets filled with the day-to-day tasks that keep the business ticking over.‍ ‍

Those tasks are important, but they shouldn’t be taking all of your time and energy.‍ ‍

Support isn’t something you earn‍ ‍

I think there’s a common misconception that support is something you reach after hitting a particular milestone.‍ ‍

That once the business is bigger, busier or more successful, then it makes sense to get help.‍ ‍

In reality, support is often the thing that helps you reach those milestones in the first place.‍ ‍

It creates capacity, consistency and, perhaps most importantly, space to focus on the things that only you can do.‍ ‍

You don’t need to have it all figured out‍ ‍

Another thing I hear regularly is:‍ ‍

“I don’t even know what I’d delegate.”‍ ‍

The truth is, you don’t need to have a perfectly organised list ready to go before reaching out for support.‍ ‍

Many clients come to me knowing they need help, but not necessarily knowing exactly what that help looks like yet.‍ ‍

That’s completely normal.‍ ‍

Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation about what’s feeling overwhelming, what’s taking up too much of your time, and where support could make the biggest difference.‍ ‍

A little support can go a long way‍ ‍

Getting support isn’t about handing over your business.‍ ‍

It’s about creating a business that feels easier to run.‍ ‍

A business where not every task, reminder, follow-up and deadline lives entirely in your head.‍ ‍

A business where you can focus on the work you enjoy and do best, knowing that the day-to-day details are being looked after too.‍ ‍

And if you’ve been wondering whether now might be the right time to get support, there’s a good chance it’s worth exploring.

‍ ‍

TL;DR: Many business owners wait longer than they need to before getting support. If you’re constantly busy, struggling to keep up, or finding that the work you really want to focus on keeps getting pushed aside, it may be a sign that your business has outgrown the way you’re currently managing it. Support isn’t about giving up control. It’s about creating space, reducing pressure and making your business feel easier to run.
